A Brief History of Donald Kohnhorst
This is from my brother's Obituary
Donald Kohnhorst died of complications arising from a stroke, in the
arms of his loving wife Gail, on August 6, 2005 in Mesa, Arizona. He was 70.
Surely most who knew him will remember him as "Mr. Kohnhorst." Others will
have known him as coach, mentor, Marine, friend, grandpa, dad and husband.
After a lifetime fascination with all things ‘Western,’ Arizona seemed the
perfect retirement choice. Born in 1934 to Leonora & August Kohnhorst in
Wausau, he was Wisconsin bred, and proud of it. A graduate of the University
of Wisconsin - Madison, Don was a lifetime Badger and Packer fan. He was
also one of The Few and The Proud - a Marine and Korean War veteran. He
taught at Long Valley School, a one-room schoolhouse in South Dakota, and
taught English at St. John's Military Academy for five years before coming
to Hartford.
He lived most of his life in Hartford where he taught History and
related subjects for over 30 years. He was an active member of the HUHS
community, serving as class advisor, yearbook advisor, tennis and football
coach and coach of the girls’ swim team for many years.
Over the years Don cultivated interests in things too numerous to mention,
but a love of woodworking, the open air, and the Budweiser Clydesdales
immediately come to mind. He and Gail enjoyed day-trips to out of the way
places, cruising the country-side in their convertible and meeting people
along the way, collecting stories and keepsakes.
Don was a loyal father to his four children by Kay (Dalton): Laura (Jay)
McCormick, Mark (Darsi) Kohnhorst, Julie (the late Steve) Zignego and
Jennifer (David) Kohnhorst, and three stepsons, Eric, Peter (Stacy) and
Philip Leach. He was a proud grandpa to Whitney Kohnhorst, Elizabeth Lamy,
Aiden & Devin Kohnhorst, Veronica Wiedl and Bergen Leach. He will be
remembered by his brothers David (Shirley) Kohnhorst and Kenneth (Charlotte)
Kohnhorst.
He will be remembered as a man who enjoyed the good things in life:
friends and family, learning and laughter.

Mark Kohnhorst
Mark is the Lake Country
Swim Team Executive Director and Head Coach, as well as
being the lead coach for
Senior Silver & Bronze and Senior Silver HS.
Mark brings 35 years of experience to
the program as a coach, swimmer and parent. Mark began coaching with the
Hartford Swim Club and Hartford HS in 1980, coaching the Boy's and
Girl's teams through to 1991. Mark's coaching career with LAKE began as
the Hartford Program coach in 1987, being promoted to the Head Age Group
coach in 1991. He assumed Head Coach and Executive Director
responsibilities in 2002.
Raised, and still living, in Hartford
Wisconsin, Mark is married to wife of 24 years, Darsi, and has three
children, Whitney, Devin and Aiden. When not on the deck or in the
office, he enjoys putzing around the house and other activities such as
cards, X-Box, 'driveway-H-O-R-S-E' and family board games. His favorite
food is a grilled, medium-rare rib eye steak, with sweet onion slices
and portabella mushrooms, done on his patio on a warm summer evening.
Mark's favorite music, as few need to be told, is the Good Ol' Grateful
Dead! |
It runs in the family...
Whitney Kohnhorst
Whitney is the Lake Country Swim Team
Novice Program
Co-ordinator as well as lead coach for the
Age
Group Bronze training group.
In her second year in this position, Whitney
was a LAKE swimmer for 10 years and coached in the Novice Program, before
attending University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Whitney holds certifications in
First Aid and CPR.
Whitney spends her free time with family and
friends, playing cards and laughing whenever she can, (which she informs us
burns calories)! Favorite card game is Euchre, and her favorite event is the
200 Freestyle. She also has large writing.
Jennifer Kohnhorst
I have some information for you to add: I am married to David James Wiedl
(another good German name) but have kept my own last name, Kohnhorst. We
were married on June 12, 2004. We have two children:
Veronica Esther Wieldl (born May 12, 2003) and Ivan David Wiedl (born
September 9, 2005).We live in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Ivan David Wiedl
We live in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
I graduated from Ripon College in 1995 with degrees in English and
Philosophy. After that I traveled in Eastern Europe, Turkey and Continental
Eurpoe for several months. I moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and after working
a plethora of temporary and part time jobs, landed at the Hungry Mind – a
wonderful independent bookstore. I eventually managed a second location,
which floundered, but left to have my daughter Veronica and stay home with
her. I wrote freelance book and movie reviews, and through that experience,
found work at a small ad agency (Agency 128, St. Cloud) as a copywriter. I
still enjoy all
manner of creative pursuits, but have little time for them with my two wee
ones around.
David was born and raised in Roseville, Minnesota – a suburb of St. Paul. He
attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, enlisted in the Air
Force and served several years in Germany, returned home to finish his MFA
in painting at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul. He is an accomplished
painter and bourgeoning sculptor and works as Operation Manager at Phillips
Recycling.
